Here are some of the best Cuban timba, reggaeton and rumba alblums of 2011 (in my opinion) from Los Van Van, Halia Mompie, Combinacion de la Habana, Los 4, Agüiri Yo and the beautiful soundtrack to Chico y Rita. Click on the ablum covers to hear music samples.

SEXTETO TRADICUBA performs live at Club Sur this Friday, 9/30. DJ Thomas will be spinning in between the sets and Dennis Ruiz will teach a free dance lesson.

The Sexteto is lead by percussionist Pedro Vargas, an accomplished musician who has toured the globe and arranged music for Barbarito Torres, one of the original “Buena Vista Social Club” member. SEXTETO TRADICUBA is Pedro’s newest project playing Cuban Son, Guaracha, Cha-cha-cha and other traditional rhythms with a modern twist.

Doors open for dinner at 8pm
The night will kick off at 9:30pm with a FREE Cuban dance lesson by Dennis Ruiz

Juan-Carlos Formell at Jazz Alley, 9/12

For one night only, Juan-Carlos Formell will perform at Jazz Alley on Monday, 9/12. He is the grandson of Francisco Formell, the arranger for Ernesto Lucuona’s Cuban Boys, and the son of Juan Formell, founder and leader of Los Van Van. He’s brilliant guitarist, singer, and composer with multiple CD’s.

Seattle Cigar Expo, Saturday 8/20

AfroCubism live at Seattle’s Woodland Park Zoo, July 6

While NG La Band, Gente De Zona, Sierra Maestra, Charanga Habanera, Pedrito Martinez (performing in Vancouver tonight) and many other Cuban bands are skipping Seattle this year, we still have a humble portion of visiting performers from Cuba, including the following:

AfroCubism live at Seattle’s Woodland Park Zoo on Wednesday, July 6. It’s outdoors and the general admission area is large with plenty of space for dancing.

AfroCubism is the long-awaited collaboration between Cuban and Malian musicians meant to take place when the Buena Vista Social Club was born, a “collaboration well worth the wait,” says The New Yorker. The New York Times describes it as “a rich yet subtle fusion of African and Cuban sounds.”

Fronting the Cuban team is the cowboy-hatted singer and guitarist Eliades Ochoa, singer of the great Buena Vista theme “Chan Chan.” The two original Malian invitees are multi-award-winning ngoni lute master Bassekou Kouyate and the extraordinary Rail Band guitarist Djelimady Tounkara, both universally agreed to be among the world’s great instrumentalists. Joining them are Eliades’ Grupo Patria, amongst Cuba’s longest running and most revered bands, the mercurial kora genius Toumani Diabate, legendary Malian griot singer Kasse Mady Diabete and the innovatory balafon player Lassana Diabate.
