African Inspired Body Movement Workshops with Dennis Richards, Sun. Dec 9th

Dennis will be teaching the first of a series of African Inspired Body Movement workshops at the Phinney Ridge Neighborhood Center in Seattle on Sunday December 9th. Workshops will focus on increasing timing, improving balance, extension, and creativity with relation to dance. The music will be a mixture of Kizomba, Kuduro, Coupe De Cale, Soukous, Dancehall, and Hip-Hop.

1-2 pm: In this first hour dancers will focus on opening up the body and increasing specificity of movement via twists, cadenced walking, and timing exercises.

2-3 pm: The second hour pushes dancers to expression, creativity and drama within their dance. Dancers learn how to own their space, share the same space, and dance the same technique to varying rhythms.

Timbalive is one of the hottest Latin bands based in Miami. Their first album, “From Miami a la Habana”, created a most unexpected success in recent Latin music history. San Francisco Rueda Festival, February 14-17

The 5th annual San Francisco Salsa Rueda festival is on Presidents’ Day weekend. This is a really big festival with lots of great performances and workshops. The fokloric performances are on Friday, and the mega-rueda is Sunday evening–reasons to attend the entire festival.

Class-before-practica, starting December 2

I’m excited to offer a casino/rueda technique class starting on Sunday, December 2nd. This will be a half-hour class right before Seattle Rueda practica—Sundays from 4:00 to 4:30 at Sonny Newman’s Dance Hall. Heading into the holidays – hope you are all well and finding some time to relax during the holiday months. Why not take a break and come out to hear some live music. Below are my public gigs in Nov and Dec. If you know anyone who is having a holiday party and would like some music, i can provide anything from solo piano through lively Latin quintets.

Sunday 11/25 Only – Change in Practica Time

Practica will start at 4:00 and end promptly by 5:30 this Sunday (11/25) in order to allow for another event. This is a one-time-only change. Congrats to Eddie and Katherine!

Wilfredo Rodriguez workshop in Bellingham, Sunday 11/25

Guest instructor Wilfredo Rodriguez of Dancing Unlimited San Diego will
teach a workshop this Sunday November 25th at StudioZ. Wilfredo gained most
of his dance experience in his native Cuba, including performing at the
legendary Tropicana nightclub. Here is the schedule:
CUBAN BODY MOTION AND STYLING 3-4pm (all levels) Wilfredo will teach body
isolation techniques as well as styling for Casino (Cuban) salsa, for both
men and women. (No partners.)
CASINO MOVES 4-5pm (intermediate/advanced) Wilfredo will teach some of his
favorite Casino partner sequences.
PRACTICA 5-6pm We’ll practice casino and rueda for the last hour,
incorporating what we learned in the workshops.
COST: $10/class, $15/both classes. Students: $7/class, $10/both classes.
Practica is free for workshop participants, and $3 for others.

Cuban Dance Immersion with Maiensy Sanchez, Saturday December 8

Body Movement for Follows, 12:00-1:50 — Let go of habits and embrace a new way to feel the music. Workshop will include a warm-up, exercise/practice, and line dance. You can adjust the degree of difficulty to your individual practice.

Intro to Dancing to the Clave Beat, 2:00-3:00 — Most Cuban popular music is based on the clave rhythm. Learn to find this rhythm in the music can take your dancing experience to another level. We’ll work on emphasis steps and breathing while exploring both traditional and contemporary Cuban social dancing. This workshop is open to both leads and follows. No partner required.
