1st Sunday at Sonny Newman’s

Posted by on 30 Sep 2011 | Tagged as: Practice

Sunday 10/2 will be the beginning of our indoor season. Let’s start off with a party! There’ll be no “practicing” calls this Sunday unless it’s to the music—let’s just dance. Bring music if you like (we can play CDs or iPods/MP3 players at Sonny’s), bring your dance shoes, bring your friends. Bring snacks! (optional: remember we have to be cleaned up and out the door at 6:30 for Sonny’s next class to begin)

See you Sunday!

To further the discussion about dancing “son” time (on 4) to salsa/timba, here’s a great example from Peru.

Maykel Blanco – why I love his song “Recoge y Vete”

Posted by on 23 Sep 2011 | Tagged as: Events, Music

My Spanish is not the best but here is the basic idea of what’s going on in this song.  The song talks about the Cuban Son (the grand-daddy of all Salsa) and how smooth it is.  From 0:13 until 0:33 is like an intro starting with hand percussion and vocals, while slowly adding additional parts.  The dancers dance on ‘four’ beat until piano enters at 0:33, at which precise moment they switch to dancing on “one”.   The music is kinda trotting along, not too exciting, but nice.  It talks about other Latin musical styles…”in Brasil they dance the Samba, in Santo Domingo the Merengue etc…”  THEN it gets exciting, when they say that in Cuba they dance the Son, at which moment the accent in the music switches to “four”, but this time within the context of TIMBA, the drummer making a hit on four, to which the dancers respond.  Check out 1:06, where they emphasize the beautiful switch to the “four” beat, the quintessence of son, with a stop on “four”, then a nice controlled spin until 1:08 where the leads accent the four beat by stepping back.  This coincides with the nice hit by the drums.  So smoooth!!!  They continue to dance on “four” til 1:16 where they switch back to dancing on “one”.  Then the music trots along again and talks about the other Latin styles until at 2:27 they hit it again: “in Cuba we dance the Son“, and the dancers respond with a hit on four (this time a ‘ponche’ if you will with a pause).  How fun…Maykel Blanco and Cuban Timba!!!

Now listen…and go see the shows

Rooftop Salsa Potluck Party Do-Over 9/24

Posted by on 23 Sep 2011 | Tagged as: Events

When: Saturday September 24, 2011 6-10 pm

Where: 2550 3rd Ave Seattle, WA 98121

Before heading out to your main event this Saturday night, pre-funk at the rooftop party! Mother Nature is blessing us with sunny weather this coming Saturday for a Do-Over of last weekend’s Rooftop Party, which ended up indoors. (Shhhh, no one tell her it will officially already be Fall by September 24th.) It’s going to be a warm and beautiful night. Perfect for one last rooftop party.

Note: my new apartment building is two blocks north (towards the Space Needle) of my old place. New building. New rooftop. New views. Same drill.

Bring: something tasty to eat or drink. A barbecue grill is available. Also bring a sweater for later. It’ll get cool after sundown around 7:00.

Music: Latin music of the Salsa, Mambo, Cuban, and Timba variety. Be our guest DJ, by bringing some favorite CDs or your iPod.

To get in, use the intercom and dial “#333.” Say “Let’s party!” and I’ll buzz you in. Take the elevator to “R” for rooftop.

Maykel Blanco in Bellingham 10/15, Club Sur 10/16!!!

Posted by on 22 Sep 2011 | Tagged as: Kick Me !! (the poster)

It’s true! Maykel Blanco in his first US tour will be playing in Bellingham (Blue Horse) on Saturday 10/15 and in Seattle (Club Sur) on Sunday 10/16. Don’t miss this incredible opportunity to meet this world famous band and dance to them with all your energy. A bailarrrr!

The band initially just had Miami, New York and San Francisco and now thanks to a combined effort is coming to the Northwest. Both concerts are guaranteed to be sold out.

For the Bellingham show: doors open at 9pm. There will be a Timba lesson at 9:30pm and a dance demo. Also the night will be invaded by Casineros, Timberos and Rumberos from Vancouver, Canada and Seattle, that means Rueda will be popping all night (and then we’ll take to the streets!)

Tickets: $22 pre-sale, $25 day of event
Note: This same show is $50 a ticket in New York and San Francisco. Due to the cost of the event we have limited the amount of pre-sale tickets to cover the expenses. Get your tickets soon at:
Blue Horse Gallery Cafe or
Rumba Northwest classes or Cafe Cubano
For information call: (360) 595-7369 or
