Cuba has a long history with playing jazz, going back to when it was first developed in New Orleans (as Havana is short boat ride away).  Cuban music was joined with jazz to create Afro-Cuban Jazz, which is commonly referred today as Latin Jazz.

Gonzalo Rubalcaba comes from a family of accomplished musicians (his father Guillermo, and his brothers Jesus & William), and they all have released CD’s.  His father typically records under the group name La Charanga Rubalcaba: http://www.descarga.com/cgi-bin/db/artists?GFuUNJJo;R;558

And you have a chance to hear one of the best Cuban jazz musician and of the greatest jazz artist this week at Jazz Alley from March 25-28.   And his band includes Yosvanny Terry, an accomplished musician from Camaguey (and friend of Maiensy), who also happens to be a great chekere player like his father.
