If there is one book you should read on Cuban music and dance, along with the history of Cuba–you must read Cuba and Its Music: From the First Drums to the Mambo by Ned Sublette.
It is the comprehensive history from the very beginnings to the 1950s. Check the link above and you can read some pages via google books. If you are truly interested in finding out more about Cuba and its Music (no wonder that is the title!), pick up this book–trust me and I think others would agree. And for those that have read it, volume II from 1950s to present–we are still waiting.

Great book by a great writer/musician who’s been an amazing promoter of Cuban music since the early 1990′s. Here’s a little bio excerpt:
In January 1990, Ned Sublette traveled to Cuba for the first time and was inspired to co-found Qbadisc, the first American record label dedicated to marketing contemporary Cuban music in the U.S. He was soon recognized as a major U.S. advocate for Cuban music, introducing American audiences to Cuban artists as diverse as Los Muñequitos De Matanzas and NG La Banda as well as Celina González, Issac Delgado, Carlos Varela and Orlando “Maraca” Valle.
