Hi everyone. Several of you have recently checked in with us to see when Jose is going to start offering a new series of Cuban folkloric dance classes & we’re thinking of starting up again sometime mid-September.
It looks like the best night for some of you is Monday, so we’re thinking of starting a 4-week series on September 14th, 7:00 – 8:15 pm. Jose would like to have a minimum of 4 people & a maximum of 8, so please let us know if you’re interested and able to commit.
The series will focus on basic dance technique and will be taught on a level that folks who don’t have much experience with Afro-Cuban dance (i.e. Orishas) would be comfortable. That said, those who already dance, will continue to learn and refine their technique.
Jose also teaches a more intermediate-level Afro-Cuban dance class on Friday afternoons from 2:00 – 3:15 pm. New folks are welcome to come, but the pace is a bit faster than what he has planned for Monday nights.
And a reminder… On Wednesday nights Jose teaches traditional Cuban Son from 6:15 – 7:30 pm and Rumba from 7:45 – 9:00 pm. The Son class is taught at an intermediate level, but beginners (especially if you have some previous dance experience) are welcome to join in.
If anyone is interested in a separate beginner-only Son class, please let us know.
For those of you who are new to Son but are dancers or dance instructors, Jose would be happy to work with you separately if you didn’t want to just jump into the ongoing Wednesday night class. Most of Jose’s teaching experience (25+ years in Cuba) is with professional Cuban dancers, so while he’s still busy figuring out how to adapt his methodology to teach non-Cuban beginners, he especially loves to teach those who already have some experience.
The Rumba class is open to all levels. We spend a fair amount of time on guaguanco, but he also teaches yambu and columbia.
Please visit our website for more info and for class schedules. Also, our YouTube site – cubanfolkloricdance – has video clips of these different dances performed by Jose’s former dance troupe Ballet Folklorico Cutumba de Santiago de Cuba. Feel free to contact us if you have any questions.
Take care~
Naomi & Jose
