Hello My Peeps!
As you know, I work at a community college and do diversity training with my students. One of the things they commit to is doing community service and apply what they learned in my training. My students leaders and I have set up a Louisiana trip to work for the Common Ground Relief organization who have been helping to restore New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina and Gustav. The poorest parts of New Orleans are still hurting. I have 6 students who will be doing wetland restoration and drywalling in the 9th District of Louisiana, the district that was hit hard by the hurricanes. We want to make a monetary donation to the Common Ground Relief House for tools and supplies they need to keep doing what they are doing. The money will also help a few poor college students pay for their travel expenses. Would you be interested in helping with a donation of $20? Our goal is a $500 total donation. Anything extra will go towards travel expenses. We have about $350. We’d like to make our goal amount. Checks are payable to the Multicultural Leadership Institute.
In return, for your $20 donation, you will get a Bilingual Children’s Book that my students and I created from the last service learning project in the Dominican Republic for kids in a small village where they grow organic coffee. This book has rhymes, songs and poems the village kids grew up with along with their personal illustrations that they made of their village, plus pictures they took with disposable cameras. The book has a forward by Julia Alvarez, a well known Dominican American author. Her forward sheds light about the fate of little girls in this part of the country. This little book is bilingual…special edition. We only have 70 copies left. The book is titled “From The Mountains To The Rivers: Bilingual Children’s Stories from Los Dajaos”
The trip my students are making will be June 13th through June 21st. I would like to collect donations by Friday, May 29, 2009, the night of the banquet that some of our SeattleRueda folks will be performing as a favor to me. I would like to be able to say that SeattleRueda has donated “X” amount of dollars for the Common Ground Relief House if that is possible. I would appreciate any help. for more information, you can contact me at at mbaida@pierce.ctc.edu.

It’s supposed to be sunny all weekend–hooray!
We’ll dance at Wallingford Steps, at the northwest corner of Gas Works Park, this Sunday. Bring sunscreen and water. (See here for location: http://www.seattle.gov/parks/park_detail.asp?ID=1000004)
If you know people who might not check the blog, please pass the word. And if anybody would be able to swing by Sonny Newman’s on their way to Gas Works on Sunday to put up a note about where we’re meeting, please let me know. Thanks!

It’s sunny today!
Bring your outdoor as well as indoor shoes to Sonny Newman’s this afternoon: It’s likely a contingent of rueda-philes will head to the Wallingford Steps at Gas Works Park to take advantage of the sun! (Directions: http://www.seattle.gov/parks/park_detail.asp?ID=1000004)
There’ll be dancing at Sonny’s as well, as we can’t guarantee everyone will see this post.
See you soon!

Our website/blog will celebrate a year this weekend. Although the community had another site for years prior, this one has been a great tool for us all–so why not a special post to celebrate that?!
Thanks to those that help maintain the site, to Cat for her weekly video posts, instructors for keeping us informed of classes, and most importantly for everyone’s participation. Here’s to this site as a tool for us all to share info on events, practica, instruction, music, videos, etc. on Cuban dance and music. Keep it going!
Georgia
PS: Stay tuned for info in the coming month on the 2009 launch of “Casino on Cardboard: Alki Beach Party”…once it warms up and stays dry…

Hello Casineros,
A few months ago, I had requested your participation in a rueda performance for a multicultural leadership banquet at Pierce College in Lakewood. The event is on Friday, May 29, 2009 from 7-9:30pm. The performance itself will be approximately between 8-8:30pm for a 5-minute performance. It would be one song (Aqui El Que Baila Gana by Pedrito Calvo y La Justicia) and I would be leading and calling. I had not heard if anyone was willing to do this. I just need at least 2 more leads and three follows. More are welcomed as long as we have even number of pairs. Please e-mail me if you are interested. I will be calling some basic moves and stuff we do in our sunday practice. Here is the list of moves I would be calling:
the beginning will be el gordo y el flaco and the end will be la foto. Everything else will be what I wrote above, not yet in any order. Anyhow, please e-mail at sbdiva32@yahoo.com if you plan to help me out. I really need your help on this.
I would like invite the folks who are interested in the rueda performance group that Christina wrote about below, to consider this a possible performance opportunity. I am not looking for synchronized perfection, just anyone who would like to have fun doing a rueda, as if we were at Sunday practice. Even if we screw up, and I call “recoje!!”, the audience would think it was part of the dance. They have never seen this dance before so it will all look fabulous to them!!!
Any takers???
