A rare opportunity to see Cuban virtuoso Hilario Duran in concert with the Duran/Schloss/Mitri Trio and Seattle’s own Cuban music ensemble Charanga Danzon at Town Hall Seattle.

Once the pianist, composer and arranger with Arturo Sandoval’s band in Cuba (1981-1990), Hilario Duran is now one of Canada’s biggest jazz names, and was named SOCAN composer of the year and Latin jazz artist of the year (2008).

This concert includes the Duran/Schloss/Mitri Trio, with an adventurous musical journey into Afrocuban jazz with live electronics and interactive computer music. Also featured is Charanga Danzon, a fluid ensemble of superb Seattle-based musicians led by violinist Irene Mitri, with a repertoire of Cuban music including traditional charanga, son/danzon, cha-cha-cha, classical, and jazz. Members of the Trio and Charanga Danzon include Irene Mitri (violin), Andy Schloss (radiodrum, percussion), Michael Nicolella (guitar), Jim O’Halloran (flutes), Fred Hoadley (piano, tres), Ben Verdier (bass), Pedro Vargas (percussion), and Francisco Medina, Jr. (percussion).

Ryan and Sidney Host Salsa Vacation in Tulum, Mexico

Posted by on 03 Apr 2009 | Tagged as: Events, Instruction

Seattle Ruederos,

We had a great time dancing with you during our visit a few weeks ago. Hopefully we’ll able to make another trip very soon!

We wanted to let you know about an exciting trip we have planned for this July in Tulum, Mexico. This unique Salsa Vacation features three and a half hours of classes each day (including Sidney’s Salsa Workout, Ryan’s Rhythm and Listening Classes, and Casino-style Partnering Classes) AND a Timba Party every night. For the full details, please visit our website at: RuedaConRitmo.com/Tulum.html

From Saturday, July 18th through Sunday, July 26th we will be dancing, relaxing, and enjoying the fabulous beaches and ancient Mayan ruins of the Yucatan Peninsula. Each day is scheduled so that you can have a great dance experience and also have free time to enjoy the many unique activities that Tulum has to offer. ZAMAS is located on a perfect crescent beach, and nearby you can easily enjoy snorkeling, diving, fishing, kayaking, windsurfing, and sailing. The resort is a short drive from four different sites of Mayan ruins, and is also very close to the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve (a UNESCO World Heritage Site).

Daily schedule

8:30 – 10:00am Sidney’s Salsa Workout OR Ryan’s Rhythm and Listening
10:00 – 5:30pm Free time to relax and explore
5:30 – 7:00pm Dinner
7:00 – 9:00pm Salsa and Rueda Classes
9:00 – 11:00pm Salsa Party

Please visit our WEBSITE for the full details. Flights are very inexpensive to Cancun right now and there is a significant DISCOUNT on both the resort accommodations and the dance packages if you sign up by May 1st. Dance packages start at $85 and a shared room can be as low as $222 for eight nights with the discount!

This is going to be an amazing experience! Please contact us at ryanandsidney@gmail.com if you have any questions or would like to sign-up.

Hope to see you all again soon,

Ryan and Sidney

Casino Leading & Following - Hands and Arms
Follows- Lessen your load while dancing by relaxing into what the lead is offering you. Start listening to the subtle signals that leads are giving you. Learn to follow from your core. Stop guessing where you’re being directed as you improve your ability to correctly sense the lead’s directional cues. Start playing off of the lead’s body and begin adding more of your personal flair. The exercises in this workshop are loads of fun.

Leads-Manipulate the follow’s hands to be in the proper position for the next move. Give the follow directional cues with your whole body, use just your fingertips for the turns, and replace force with finesse. Improve both ”tension-release” and the precision of your lead, as you focus on where the follow’s momentum is in relation to your body. Change hand-hold(s) within a single 8-count, and decrease follow-lead ambiguity as you dance.
NOTE: Registration required in order to have correct lead-to-follow ratio. Instructor approval required.
