Posted by on 05 Mar 2009 | Tagged as: Instruction

A contact of mine at a local coffee company has a new employee from Colombia who is in need of one-on-one English lessons. As our group is quite international and some of you might be trained in teaching English I thought to post this here.

Looking to make some extra $…contact me and I’ll provide more details.

Posted by on 04 Mar 2009 | Tagged as: Events, Practice

Hi, everyone!  Finally my sojourn in Portland is over, and I am back for good — in Magnolia!  I have a house that I have to fill with housemates and my new preschool business, but as I just moved in, it is completely empty, and ready for a party!!

I’ll have food and music, and if everyone comes, then we’ll have everyone!  All are welcome to bring music and food, too.  Also, feel free to bring instruments, so we can make music.  I have a piano.

Saturday, March 14 from after the workshops or 6 pm until 12 am, or whenever we are done.

Cameron’s house at 2919 27th Ave W in Seattle, between Barrett and Fulton.

RSVP in the comments section!

CLASS DESCRIPTIONS:

SATURDAY, MARCH 14TH
1:00PM Sidney and Ryan’s Favorite Essential Casino Moves 1 (Beg/Int) – In this workshop we’ll show you some of our favorite partnering moves that we’ve learned from teachers in Cuba, Miami, and throughout the United States, as well as original moves of our own creation. We may split up into two groups (beginning and intermediate – one taught by each of us) at different levels if it suits the needs of the class.

2:00PM Body Movement and Styling for Men (taught by Ryan)

2:00PM Body Movement and Styling for Women (taught by Sidney)

3:00PM Dancing the Rhythms of Timba – Cuban salsa (sometimes called timba) is incredibly rich and rhythmically layered, offering us a great abundance of musical material to draw upon as dancers. This class will help you unlock the wealth of rhythms present in timba and show you how to express these rhythms with your body. This rhythmic understanding will enhance your enjoyment of the music and invigorate your dancing, both in the rueda and with a partner. We’ll dance to LIVE percussion as well as to recorded music, enabling you to improve your ear and sense of time, truly strengthening your connection to the music.

4:00PM Sidney’s Salsa Workout – In this highly energetic, full body workout, we explore the roots and relatives of salsa. Through isolations we gain strength, flexibility and articulate expression throughout the entire body beginning with the core. We warm up with the basic salsa footwork and move on to explore more complex rhythmic variations, stylistic embellishments and related dance styles building towards completing the class with a dynamic and fun choreography.

SUNDAY, MARCH 15TH
1:00PM Bailando Casino: Styling and Partnering Technique for Cuban Style Salsa – Cuban-style salsa (sometimes called casino) is dynamic and circular, even when not danced in a circle (rueda). In this class we will teach some of our favorite patterns (traditional and original) to share traveling and partnering techniques essential for understanding Casino. The alternate title for this class could be “How Sidney and Ryan Really Dance”. These are the moves that we love, that we enjoy dancing together socially and that we almost always include in our choreography.

2:00PM Putting Son Into Salsa: Style, Moves, and Partnering Technique – Salsa is just the latest in a long lineage of Cuban dances, the most important of which is son (pronounced like the first syllable of sonar). Just as the best Cuban bands include references to this older style in their music, many of the best dancers incorporate elements of son into their salsa dancing. In this workshop, we’ll teach the fundamental steps, body movement, and turns of this strongest ancestor of salsa.

3:00PM Changing Time with Clave – Has anyone ever asked you if you dance ‘on 1′ or ‘on 2′? We answer, “both, and on 3, as well!” We think it’s important to be able to dance on any beat and to be able to switch back and forth between them based on what’s happening in the music. This class will emphasize how to use the clave — the rhythmic foundation of salsa and timba — as a guide to switching time. Using this rhythmic awareness, we’ll show you practical partnering techniques that to enable you to fluidly and seamlessly switch time, both with a single partner and in the rueda as a group.

4:00PM Sidney and Ryan’s Favorite Essential Casino Moves 2 (Beg/Int) – We’ll use our final class to show you more of our favorite partnering moves we’ve learned from teachers in Cuba, Miami, and throughout the United States, as well as original moves of our own creation. We may briefly review the turn patterns that we covered the day before moving on to new material. Again, we may split up into two groups (one taught by each of us) at different levels if it suits the needs of the class.
