Hello there everyone,

Wow!!  What a weekend of Cuban music we will have starting this Friday. There are 3, count them 3, Cuban music events going on tomorrow night alone.  Greeeeeeeeeeeat!  Well, if any of you are not too tired to dance more on Saturday, I would love to have you come by my Rueda & Samba bootcamp at the Phinney Ridge Community Center. It starts at midday.

These workshops are designed for beginners so tell your friends so that we can build the local rueda community. I am particularly looking for more leads. So if you know of anyone who has been talking about learning rueda, please send them my way.

Thanks to all.

Take care and keep dancing.

Dennis

This Friday! Charanga Danzón and Grupo Ashé

Posted by on 18 Mar 2009 | Tagged as: Events, Music

Hi everyone,

Please try to join us for this special evening in the elegant D.A.R. mansion on Capitol Hill, this Friday March 20.  It’s a great venue to relax and listen to some gorgeous “Cuban chamber music” performed by Charanga Danzón in the living room, followed by energetic dancing in the upstairs ballroom with Grupo Ashe. Lance Lu is our special guest for the concert, playing examples of shekere and guiro son, and we’ll be performing everything from solo guitar to danzón to jazz. Bring your family and friends — all ages are welcome. (Parent map magazine just listed our concert as an event pick for the month!) You’ll want to get advance tickets, as door prices go up.

Kind Words.

Hey Rueda/Casino Family,

I just quickly wanted to share with everyone some kind words I received regarding the past weekend:

“Yes indeed, thanks again for welcoming us in to the Seattle Rueda community. You guys have a really great group of people dancing some great salsa.”                                       -Casinero from Vancouver

Thank You Ryan and Sidney, once again, for infusing excitement in our community!…and teaching us new flavor and moves for our dancing lives.  See you again soon.

It was great to see new faces out there along with the die-hards!

Mon, March 16, 7:30pm: Sidney’s Salsa Workout‏

Posted by on 14 Mar 2009 | Tagged as: Instruction

¡Hola!

As we know, Instructors Sidney and Ryan are in town from San Francisco teaching the dance workshop this weekend. And they will also be in town this coming week. Sidney is willing to teach her workout class on Monday night (in the same location as where Instructor Dennis Richards normally teaches his rueda classes.) The class isn’t only a full workout, but aids in learning all types of Cuban dance movements. We loved it today in class so much, come join the encore on Monday night!

Sidney’s Salsa Workout – In this highly energetic, full body workout, we explore the roots and relatives of salsa. Through isolations we gain strength, flexibility and articulate expression throughout the entire body beginning with the core. We warm up with the basic salsa footwork and move on to explore more complex rhythmic variations, stylistic embellishments and related dance styles building towards completing the class with a dynamic and fun choreography.

party central

Hi all — just an update on our party on Saturday.  I’ve got the dance floor cleared and am about to go grocery shopping to feed us.  I’ll be making 7 layer dip, with chips and other finger foods.  I’m hoping that you all would bring the drinks:  any flavor or alcohol level will do.  I have a blender, if that helps inspire.  Any food dishes would be welcome, too.

Also, if you have any musical instruments, especially drums, please bring them! If you bring music, please make it in electronic format, not CDs, cause I can’t play ‘em.  I’ll ask Ryan to be our DJ, if he wants to.

Those who need to are welcome to stay over.  Just know that while I have a ton of room (3 empty bedrooms I’m trying to rent out right now), I have few beds, so you might want to bring a pillow and blanket!

Update About This Weekend with Sidney & Ryan

Posted by on 12 Mar 2009 | Tagged as: Social

My Dear Rueda Family,

Just got the news that Sidney & Ryan will be arriving on Saturday, however, we can still meet up for a nice dinner at Ras Dashen on Friday and just enjoy each other’s company. The food is great and inexpensive and it’s Friday and I want to celebrate my official completion and granting of my tenure faculty status from work….so if anyone is still up for going..I am taking the bus to the restaurant. Join me or there’s more “gomen” for me!!! Another thing to update you all, which I take full responsibility for, is that I made an error on the schedule about the workshops going from 1-4pm. It actually goes from 1-5pm. A slight error but an innocent one. :) Lastly, The name of the new Cuban Restaurant is Pequeña Havana. Based on the blog that Georgia mentioned on the comments of my previous blog entry, sounds like an awesome place to eat. I am already on it to make sure it’s open on Sunday after practice. More later.
