An Engineer posted these to the Boeing  Rueda Group and I thought that they would be great here.

Notice how tight the moves are and everyone is doeing the same hand/arm movements when going from partner to partner.

Selenas – Something New Going On

Posted by on 08 Jul 2008 | Tagged as: Events

cubanitas

Hi all,

We have been having great times at Selenas since it began. I want to thank everyone for turning out and hope that you will continue to support our efforts to provide a club in Seattle dedicated to Cuban Music and a place for Timberos to do their thing.

Starting this weekend we are changing things up.

Instead of being open every weekend we will be gearing more toward doing events once a month.

Our next event is on July 26th which will feature my usual excellent mix of musica Cubana and a Midnight Fashion show that you do not want to miss.

Also we will are bringing THE SUPERSONES “LIVE IN CONCERT” to Selenas on August 9th (second Saturday in August) and will have them on a regular monthly basis after that.

So that is the latest from Selenas.

For dancing this weekend I’d check out Amore’ in Bellltown Friday night and there is a reggaeton group from Frisco coming to Fusion Saturday night.

[1566] CUBAN FOLKLORIC DANCE CLASS with José Carrión

Tuesday nights, 6:30 – 8:00 pm: 8 weeks, starts July 8, 2008 in Fremont

Learn traditional Cuban folkloric dance from a true master! José Carrión was the principal dancer and corps professor of Ballet Folklórico Cutumba de Santiago de Cuba. He will be teaching a variety of Afro-Cuban and Afro-Haitian dances including Orishas, Rumba, Arará, Yuka, Makuta, Palo, Gagá and Vodú. The classes will be accompanied by live percussion and are open to students of all levels.

REGISTRATION THROUGH ASUW EXPERIMENTAL COLLEGE

General Public: $90; UW Students: $85.   Please note: all course fees are in addition to the registration fee (general public – $10 and current UW student – $5).  To register, please go to the online catalog at www.exco.org.

José Carrión was the principal dancer and corps professor of Ballet Folklórico Cutumba de Santiago de Cuba. Born in Santiago de Cuba, he began his career as a professional dancer when he was invited to join the Cutumba in 1980 at the age of 17. After only 3 years of hard work, José was recognized as a “primer bailarín.” The following year, in 1984, after an evaluation by a national panel of Cuba’s most distinguished specialists in music and dance, José was honored with the title of professor and specialist in Cuban dance. In 1999, after almost 20 years of being a soloist for the dance troupe, José became Cutumba’s principal dancer.

After 25 years of researching & presenting the folkloric manifestations of Afro-Franco-Haitian-Cuban origin found primarily in Cuba’s Eastern (Oriente) provinces, José has retired from Cutumba. In April 2005, he moved to Seattle where he currently co-directs the Academy of Cuban Folklore & Dance.More information at www.cubanfolkloricdance.com
PS – Much folkloric dance is the basis for popular dance, therefore for you casino and rueda dancers this class would be a great addition to the foundation of your dancing skills.

Casino on Cardboard CANCELLED for Thurs, July 3rd

Posted by on 03 Jul 2008 | Tagged as: Alki Beach Parties: Casino on Cardboard

Sorry to disappoint, but Casino on Cardboard: Alki Beach party is cancelled tonight, Thurs, July 3rd due to the weather.  Even if it clears up or stays the same and the chance of rain tonight is incorrect, we think the sand might just be too wet for our cardboard dance floor after the big storm last night.

Still itching to dance?  Blog or comment away if you’d like to meet up at Century Ballroom tonight instead for some casino and/or rueda there.  And, see above in “Upcoming” or the post below for more dancing opportunities for this weekend.

We hope for good weather next week – see you then:  Thurs, July 10th, 7pm.

Reminder –Casino on Cardboard: Alki Beach party tomorrow Thursday, July 3rd, 7pm.  For more details click the category to the right.

Rain Plan: At this point there is a chance of rain for tomorrow night;  based on the forecast we will make a decision mid-day to cancel if necessary.  Please check back on the blog for an update.

(Plan B would be to meet up at Century Ballroom instead as folks might still be iching to dance.  And, Friday is a holiday.)

And while I am posting, more opportunities for the weekend (to name just a few):

Friday, July 4th, 9:30pm - SuperSones play at Conor Byrne Pub

Saturday, July 5th, 10pm - DJ Baracoa at Selena’s in Wallingford

Sunday, July 6th, 1:45pm - Grupo Ashé at Hispanic Seafair;  and rueda practice at 4:30pm at the Wallingford Steps

Enjoy the start to the 3-day Holiday Weekend!
