Start the summer off with a huge b-day bash for Nick at O’Asian this Friday, 6/20.
There will be a fashion show with collections from Ki Ki Corona and Dzul clothing. Then Tudo Belleza will perform some hot Samba dances. And of course Nick will be spinning some fresh Salsa, Reggaeton, Merengue, and Hip-Hop.

The posting about the event in France reminded me to post about an event in Rome called FIESTA: Festival Internationale di musica e cultura latino americana. It lasts for the three summer months and the line-up this year is incredible. Almost all the top timba band favorites will be there this year!
I went in 2000 for a day, and it was a highlight of being in Rome. Being 2000, it mostly showcased the Buena Vista stuff. Look at the line-up for July (luglio) for example: http://www.fiesta.it/_luglio.php
PS – I think that this is what Nadja commented about as well.

I am working to get a new beginning rueda class started soon! To keep costs down, I’m planning to have it at open flight in the U district, and they’ve offered me very few choices: Saturday 7-8 pm or 8-9 pm. Would you guys help me decide which would be best? Dennis’s class is earlier and dancing at Selena’s Guadalajara is later — considering that and the flow of the weekend, which would you or your beginning friends prefer/be able to make it to?
Thanks!!!!!

[1566] CUBAN FOLKLORIC DANCE CLASS with José Carrión
Tuesday nights, 6:30 – 8:00 pm: 8 weeks, starting July 8, 2008 in Fremont
Learn traditional Cuban folkloric dance from a true master! José Carrión was the principal dancer and corps professor of Ballet Folklórico Cutumba de Santiago de Cuba. He will be teaching a variety of Afro-Cuban and Afro-Haitian dances including Orishas, Rumba, Arará, Yuka, Makuta, Palo, Gagá and Vodú. The classes will be accompanied by live percussion and are open to students of all levels.
REGISTRATION THROUGH ASUW EXPERIMENTAL COLLEGE
General Public: $90; UW Students: $85. Please note: all course fees are in addition to the registration fee (general public – $10 and current UW student – $5). To register, please go to the online catalog at www.exco.org.
José Carrión was the principal dancer and corps professor of Ballet Folklórico Cutumba de Santiago de Cuba. Born in Santiago de Cuba, he began his career as a professional dancer when he was invited to join the Cutumba in 1980 at the age of 17. After only 3 years of hard work, José was recognized as a “primer bailarín.” The following year, in 1984, after an evaluation by a national panel of Cuba’s most distinguished specialists in music and dance, José was honored with the title of professor and specialist in Cuban dance. In 1999, after almost 20 years of being a soloist for the dance troupe, José became Cutumba’s principal dancer.
PS – Much folkloric dance is the basis for popular dance, therefore for you casino and rueda dancers this class would be a great addition to the foundation of your dancing skills.

Hi,
I’ve recently talked to Sidney Weaverling and Ryan Mead about doing a workshop in Seattle this summer. They will be teaching on the Alaska in Havana Cruise and could come beforehand to give a two-day intermediate/advanced workshop on August 9th and 10th.
I am writing to gauge and see if there is sufficient interest and get feedback on this idea.
I’ve taken classes for years with Sidney. She is the best dance teacher I’ve ever had (in any genre of dance). Ryan started teaching after I left SF, but I’ve taken a few classes with him and think he is a wonderful instructor.
The format we are thinking of is two afternoons Saturday and Sunday. Each day we’d do 3 or 4 hour long workshops. You can see some of the classes they have designed in the attached document. We’d do a party on Saturday as well.
The cost would probably be between $70 and $90 (depending on if there were 6 or 8 workshops in total) with potentially a discount for those signing up in advance.
Click here for a list of classes that they teach with their bios.
I’d like to get a feedback on this from you all: Please email me or ( workshop AT seattlerueda.com ) and let me know:
This is a great opportunity to get great instruction here in Seattle and raise our level as a group of dancers. I hope we can make this happen.

I just posted 40 or so pictures that I took at Grupo Ache at the Edmond’s Art Festival in the Gallery under the Album name of eddiea24. If any one know how to rename that more appropriately please let me know how.
Thanks
