Welcome to the New Blog

We need to get working on making this into what we all want. We will need volunteers to make this happen.
* We need to get a new design – this is just a placeholder – my suggestion is to look for a free template that is good and meets our needs. then we can tweak it to our liking.
* We need to think how to organize the site so it can hold useful long term information. The 1st incarnation of the blog did a better job than the most recent version – it would be great to have good areas for music / video / pictures / resources etc.
We welcome – people – ideas…..

Ofer – thank you for spending the time this weekend to set up this nice new blog.
What a great start! ¡¡Muchas Gracias!!
I am happy to volunteer to help compile information on music, dance venues, classes, etc so that this information is available for us here in Seattle and for those that may be traveling through. I’ll work on it this week.
Que tengan una buena semana.
Georgia
Thanks !
* We need to work on what Pages we have – such as venues/classes/etc. (will appear on top – were we now have Home /About )
* we need to decide what we want on the side bar: calendar / recent comments etc…
* regarding calendar – the setup allowed setting up a public google calendar : calendar.google.com – but I haven’t spent any time figuring out if it has any advantages over using upcoming.yahoo.com as we did before.
I have a request, if it can be done: is it possible to put some box that can always recur at the top of the page for “Current news” or something like that?
It would be great if Georgia and I could go in periodically and say things like: YES–Sunday practica moves outdoors June 1, or NO–We will not be at the beach this Thursday, see you next week. And that people would always know where to look to be confident about time/place of meetings.
What do you think?
I think its a good idea – I’ll see if there is a plugin that will support this – otherwise it would require a little more effort.
Hey all,
I’m willing to help too…maybe assign me something you think i’d be good at…(not eating glue…very funny.) I don’t know where to begin…so anything is fine.
I like your idea Kyra…if it can be done.
Maybe it would have to go in a small “side bar” at very top.
What i really liked about the previous format, after using other blogs…is the recent comments section in the side bar! It makes it SO much easier to track discussions.
I know this is just a template to grow off of…so here is my comment on what’s here.
Even more contrast on text color against background. I would go with Black for body text. I don’t mind the headings a different color as long as they are legible/bold..
I was thinking about design too…as i was looking at old photos in flickR. Just brainstorming here…what if we took the Wallingford steps paving design and used it as some type of design on the border or background?? That might be cool. If not that, i’m sure a lot of us have Cuba, dance, beach, other miscellaneous pretty photos we could play around with in Photoshop, etc…
Thanks all and Ofer!!…just let me know how i could contribute.
follow up – quick response Ofer!
the ‘News’ box at the top works great!
PS – I looked at the photos of the Wallingford steps design. It’s not that great. The paving design looks good in it’s context…sun, sky, dancers,…3-D, etc…but doesn’t “speak” to me in 2-D.
laters…
Sam,
Thanks for the comments. I am inherently lazy and needed the push for the recent comments even though it was on my list…
Good catch on the text color – I’ve changed it – I think its easier to read.
One think you may be able to help with is research/figure out what we should do/what are our options for calendar – we could do it the way we did before via integrating with upcoming .org or do we want something different – taking to Barbara and seeing what other sites do and researching various wordpress plugins would be helpful.
Thanks Ofer. We really appreciate your hard work. I’ll keep playing the music. Let’s keep dancing!!!! DJ Baracoa aka Daivd
Ofer,
Yes, much better on the body text!
EVERYONE:
A couple of limitations or just quirky-ness of Upcoming was 1. that a yahoo email is needed. 2. that it’s primarily venue driven (so as an example…rueda practice or informal gatherings could not be, or, are more difficult to add) I just looked at the Upcoming “Group” option. It would allow anyone to post, but it would require everyone to have/make a Yahoo email to join the Group. hm…
The positives of Upcoming was that it was straightforward, popular with arts/music communities, and it included the entire web community.
So:
Here are some of the answers I might need to inform us of which web calendar tool would be best for the group:
1. Would we want 1 or more people to be in charge of keeping the calendar, and adding events others bring to their attention? OR…have unlimited access by everyone to add events as they find them?
2. What events do we want on the calendar? Limit it to public events?
3. Any other tools you would like to see associated with the calendar?
Thanks!
All,
I actually like the placeholder header in many ways, however this is our chance to explore!
Seattle Rueda should be the dominant heading as you open the main page. Right now it’s lost a bit. I really like the sub-text a lot!…it gives a quick hitting description of the site. I would like to try to keep it in the Logo we decide on, if possible.
Barbara! and other designers, this is your chance to have some fun!…if you have the time. Create a Logo/Text and/or explore what other templates might work. I would love to see what some talented folks in the community could show us.
Ahi nama!
HI
I can help somewhat with design, and glad to update music events. I used to do that regularly before. Does anyone know how to link this site up with the upcoming. org? Suki had it linked with one password and it automatically went to the blog. If anyone knows how, let me know and I can resume helping.
