Thoughts on the Blog Events Calendar…

EVERYONE:
Could you give me your thoughts on what you would like to see from the Calendar for the Blog; format, functions, etc?? Thanks!
A couple of limitations or just quirky-ness of Upcoming.org is…1. that a yahoo email is needed. 2. that it’s primarily venue driven (so as an example…rueda practice or informal gatherings could not be, or, are more difficult to add) I just looked at the Upcoming “Group” option. It would allow anyone to post, but it would still require everyone to have/make a Yahoo email to join the Group. hm…
The positives of Upcoming was that it was a straightforward list, popular with arts/music communities, and it included the entire web community.
So:
Here are some of the answers I might need to inform us of which web calendar tool would be best for the group:
1. Would we want 1 or more people to be in charge of keeping the calendar, and adding events others bring to their attention? OR…have unlimited access/flexibility for many to add events as they find them??
2. What events do we want on the calendar? Limit it to public events?
3. Any other tools you would like to see associated with the calendar?
Thanks!

Hi Sam and all,
I hope this finds everyone well today – the start of the weekend!!
My thoughts on the calendar:
1. First it will be a great tool for our new and improved blog
2. I don’t think it a good idea to have it attached to a yahoo.com account, but separate
3. I think that we should include the following types of events on the calendar:
–live music & DJ events(like Barbara did before)
–Selena’s Saturdays
–Rueda practice
–Alki Thursdays
–And other events that relate, like at the EMP for example
Basically a list of all the things we go to and people might like to go to also
4. I think it is best if one or two people keep up the calendar for efficiency’s sake. ANYONE can post on the main/home page and the calendar person can add it to the calendar. Barbara – glad you can do this again. I am happy to help too.
From there, we either choose a tool to manage the information OR do it text based.
CALENDAR TOOLS
Sam – could you continue to search out some tools?
TEXT BASED CALENDAR
Here is an example of a text based calendar, I would simplify it a bit but once the text is set it is just a matter of copy and paste every few weeks.

And, another example from our very own SuperSones:

5. Lastly, can/should we have the CALENDAR as a link on the horizontal bar after ABOUT?
Georgia
Yup! I’m on it. That’s why I asked.
Yeah, I like the idea of seeing everything on the calendar. (minus private events that people don’t want advertised, of course – that’s up to them)
Yeah, i like the Supersones example. it’s easy to read. However, I know sometimes like to see things in the 30 day format, it helps to see the big picture. And then the text on each day could be linked (clickable) to the descriptive text body of text. hm? I’ll look into it.
and YES…I think the CALENDAR link should go on the top bar.
I’ll keep you posted. Sam
* It would be good to have a calendar area that is a little smarter than just text… and I did like the fact that we did previously did get the next events automatically on the sidebar.
* I already mentioned that there is a calendar.seattlerueda.com – the downside again is that it seems that you need to have a login for everyone and need to login to create an event. there seem to be a few widgets for it
